# A line that leaves, turns, and comes back.

*Free and open source app*

Leave the border, cut across the field and return: whatever is left without the Thread is yours. Double the points for going slowly, and double the time out in the open.

*What kind of game*

## The border is safe. And nothing is won there.

You live on the border of the field, and while you stay there nothing can happen to you. To take ground, though, you have to leave it: cross the open field and come back on the other side. The line you leave behind splits the field in two, and the half with no Thread left in it becomes yours. A game is the same question asked a hundred times over: how far is it worth going, right now.

Three things try to stop you, and there are three because each one closes a different way out. The Thread is a ribbon writhing across the open field, and it kills the line you have out — the whole line, not only its tip. The Sparks run along the border, which is exactly where you would be safe. And the Fuse is your own line catching fire when you stand still: it starts where you left the border and comes towards you. Together they say one thing, and it is the rule the whole game rests on — there is nowhere to wait and see what the others do.

Then there is the bet. Cutting slowly is worth double the points and leaves you exposed twice as long, so the question is never «is the slow stroke worth it», it is «is it worth it now». And two moves can be gone looking for rather than merely survived: shutting a Thread inside a tight enough pocket catches it instead of killing you, and a cut that leaves two Threads in two separate regions is worth more than any claim.

The percentage you read at the top is not an estimate. A game of this kind usually keeps the field as an image and counts coloured pixels; here the field is a polygon on integer coordinates and the area comes out exact. So that number is the same on a phone and on a monitor, and two games can genuinely be compared — which is the only thing that makes a high score table more than a column of numbers. It is the principle of the rest of the catalogue, measure where the data is, applied to a game rather than to a file of readings.

### What it does

- You cut the field and keep the part the Thread did not stay in. Reach the quota — 70% on the first level, a little more on each one after — and the level is done.
- Fast stroke or slow stroke: the slow one is worth double the area and leaves you exposed twice as long.
- Three different threats: the Thread roaming the open field, the Sparks running along the border, and the Fuse eating your line if you stand still.
- Shutting the Thread inside a tight pocket catches it, instead of killing you.
- Eight arenas, islands included, put in order of measured difficulty rather than by eye. A second Thread from the third level, where the arena has room for two.
- After the eighth they come round again, but not the same: every full lap the Sparks start faster.
- Keyboard, mouse and touch: you point at where to go and the marker goes there, with a dashed line telling you beforehand what will happen. On a phone the field turns sideways on its own, and a buzz tells you what happened even with the sound off.
- A table with your name in it, asked for at the end of every game.
- Export and re-import the table as a file, so clearing the browser does not take it away.
- Works offline after the first visit, and installs as an app.

### What it does not do

- It does not ask for an account, and has none to ask for.
- It does not send the score anywhere: the table belongs to this machine, the way the cabinet's belonged to its own.
- It has no advertising, no purchases, and nothing to unlock by paying.
- It does not work better online: after the first visit it has no further need of the network.

*At a glance*

#### High scores

They belong to this browser. They stay here, and you export them whenever you like.

#### Data

It stays on your computer. After the page has loaded, the app makes no network requests.

#### Coins

Endless and free. The coin is the starting ritual, not a limit.

#### Controls

Keyboard, mouse, touch. The same rules for all three.

#### Licence

Apache-2.0: the code is what the browser downloads, with no build step in between.

*FAQ*

## Frequently asked questions

### Why is the table not shared?

Because a shared table needs a server to receive the scores, and these apps have none. It is the same choice that makes the game usable with no connection and no account. If you need to compare with somebody, export the file: it holds the whole table.

### Does it play well on a phone?

Yes, and it was designed to rather than adapted afterwards. Held upright, the field turns ninety degrees: a rotation changes neither areas nor distances, so it is the same game held sideways — and it fits almost twice as large. With a finger you point at where you want to arrive and the marker goes there: near a wall it walks the border, out in the field it cuts, and the dashed line tells you which before you lift your finger. The aim point sits a little above the finger so your hand does not cover what you are looking at, and it drops back to the finger near the bottom of the screen, where there is nothing left to uncover and the only thing that matters is reaching the wall.

### Is the slow stroke worth it?

It depends on where the Thread is, and that is the whole decision of the game. It is worth double the area and leaves you exposed twice as long, so the right question is not «is it worth it» but «is it worth it now».
